Sèvres Porcelain for the Courts of France
October 25 (Sat) – February 1 (Sun), 2026
The Hosomi Museum's “Encountering Ceramics series” focuses on various ceramics. For its 10th installment, we present the renowned French porcelain factory of Sèvres, considered the pinnacle of ceramics.
European nations longed for the white porcelain of the East.
While Germany's Meissen kiln succeeded in firing the first white porcelain in the early 18th century, it was the Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Sèvres, established by the French Bourbon dynasty, that created a style truly recognizable as Western. The establishment of this workshop involved deep involvement from Madame de Pompadour and King Louis XV. The lavishly opulent Sèvres porcelain continued to be produced under the successive French monarchy, empire, and republic, enduring to this day.
Sèvres porcelain is characterized by designs incorporating contemporary fashions, magnificent and meticulous pictorial expression, and delicate coloration. As it was produced to order for royalty and nobility, surviving pieces are limited, but in recent years, an outstanding collection of Sèvres porcelain has been established in Japan.
