Zohiko Urushi Art from the Mitsui Memorial Museum Collection
December 3, 2011 to January 29, 2012
The Mitsui family have been patrons of Kyoto culture since the Edo period, having kept their residence in the city while operating large shops in Edo (present day Tokyo). Since the Meiji Restoration, fearing the decline of Japanese decorative arts due to the influx of Western culture, the Mitsui family has supported Japanese traditional craftsmen such as the Kyo-yaki family, Eiraku. One of the recipients of the Mitsui patronage is Zohiku, the makers of luxurious and gorgeous maki-e lacquerware (Japanese: urushi).
Established in 1661, Zohiko made a great number of masterpieces through the patronage of the Mitsui family, former industrial conglomerate members, as well as the Imperial family from the Meiji to Showa periods.
Through the cooperation of the Mitsui Memorial Museum, some 40 works of maki-e lacquerware belonging to Mitsui family will be exhibited in the Kansai region for the first time. We hope you take this chance to enjoy these brilliant and glittering works of maki-e, one of the representative works of Japanese decorative art.
