Tiny Chinese Ceramics: Treasures on a Palm
June 5th to July 25th, 2010
China has produced a great number of fine ceramics, having developed the world’s most sophisticated ceramic techniques and modeling. There are the large-scale (macro) terracotta soldiers which were made for the first Qin Emperor of China and stand almost 2 metres high. On the other hand, China also has a tradition of producing small-scale (micro) works measuring a few centimetres. Among these, the smallest pieces are the size of one’s fingertip.
From these macro and micro ceramic traditions of China, this exhibition takes a look at the small-scale category, hence the sub-title, “Treasures on a palm”.
Made for a multitude of purposes, the pieces in this exhibition summarize a ceramic tradition of approximately 6000 years, from the neolithic period to the Qing Dynasty.
Through these small-sacle works, we hope you can catch a glimpse of the world of Chinese ceramics from this exhibition and enjoy this rare form of pottery.
